WHAT CAUSES MOLES?
Moles are caused when cells in the skin, called melanocytes, grow in clusters or clumps with tissue surrounding them. Clusters of these pigmented cells commonly appear as small, dark brown spots. Moles can develop on any part of your body. They can vary in size and can be flat or raised, smoothed or wrinkled. Most moles develop in the first forty years, and people have between 10 and 40 moles on average. However, new moles can develop at middle age while some moles may actually get lighter and softer as you get older. Most moles are harmless but a professional evaluation is necessary to determine any moles that have pre-cancerous signs.
